ACCUSPEED TRANSMISSION MAINTENANCE RECOMMENDATIONS Because the Accuspeed transmission uses a modern hi-tensile polyrib belt, (and has no oil sump) routine maintenance is reduced to a minimum. However, the maintenance procedures should be performed at approximately 1500 hours operation intervals.* Four routine procedures are recommended: 1. Grease lubrication 2. Belt tensioning 3. Cleaning 4. Visual inspection
Grease: There are four grease fittings on the top of the Accuspeed transmission, one for each shaft bearing. About three shots of grease from a standard hand held grease gun for each fitting should be added approximately every 1500 operating hours. The amount and grease interval can be adjusted based on the results observed in the visual inspection. However be consistent in the greasing schedule. Do not over-grease so that excess grease is thrown from the grease seals either inside or outside the Accuspeed transmission during operation. Use a high quality NLGI #2 grease, Penetration 265-295. We use "ST-80 by Century Lubricating Oils, Kansas City, KS 66111." The bearing in the idler pulley is not re-greasable, but should be replaced after 10,000 hours operation time. The main shaft bearings should be replaced after 25,000 hours operation time and whenever Drive Assemblies are replaced. The cone bearing on the Drive Assembly is not re-greaseable. With normal operation, this bearing will last until normal wear requires replacement of the drive assembly. Belt Tension: Proper belt tension is achieved when there is 5/8" space between the two blocks which hold the tension springs. With proper tension, the springs will be almost closed. Do not close the spring coils by over tensioning. Cleaning: During the visual inspection, remove all loose dirt from the internals of the Accuspeed transmission. This can be done with an industrial vacuum cleaner. Wipe off any excess grease, which may have seeped from the shaft seals due to over greasing. DO NOT APPLY SOLVENTS OR LUBRICANTS to any of the rotating components. Visual Inspection: During long operation runs, the temperature inside the Accuspeed transmission may increase to about ten degrees above the room ambient temperature. An internal air temperature above 115F may cause shorter life. Such high temperatures are generally the result of bearing malfunction. Determine the cause of the high temperature and correct the condition. In the event of a main shaft bearing failure, replace all shaft bearings and seals. Immediately upon shutdown after long operation, test the bearing temperature by hand. Properly running bearings will be warm to the touch, but not so hot as to cause pain. With the cover removed, inspect the belt for excessive wear. Check for proper belt tension. Check the Drive Assemblies for loose segments or other signs of wear. Check the bearing locknut for tightness. For those Drive Assemblies with lock washers, tighten only to the first lock washer tab which matches a notch in the locknut, after the locknut is snug. EXCESSIVE TIGHTENING IS OF NO VALUE. Check the set screws in the OUTBOARD BEARINGS for tightness.
* We recommend that an elapsed time hour meter be installed to operate with the sheeter's main motor. Maintenance on the sheeter should be recorded with the date and "Hours Elapsed Time" every time any sheeter maintenance is performed.
